The special history of Callantsoog

At our park, we would like to tell you about the special culture and history of Callantsoog through the field names.

t Oghe
The current Callantsoog or rather the former island t Oghe has played an important role in shaping the Kop van Noord Holland. Callantsoog was built on the remains of the old island t Oghe and was flooded by the sea several times.

The inhabitants had to fight the water for centuries. Many information and traces in the landscape are still present and tell a fascinating story.

Kooibosch
Close to Callantsoog, on the edge of De Nollen, is the Kooibosch, a former duck decoy. The pond in which the decoy was built was created around 1600 after a dike breach and can be visited during excursions. Breeding in the forest include the green woodpecker and birds of prey such as buzzard, hawk and sparrow hawk.

Amid the trees is an open area, once a field where reeds were grown, now bluegrass meadow: a very rare type of nature in the Netherlands.

 Hollywood

The people of Callantsoog were notified in August 1942 that they had to leave the village within 10 days. However, many residents were keen to continue living near their village. A fellow villager then came up with the idea of moving the wooden summer houses that stood in the village to a safer spot just outside Callantsoog. This created a village that was soon named Hollywood.

Eventually, the houses were reinstated and some can still be found in the village.
